Mamad the Honest Man

A child friendly illustration of a fox and a king lion inspired by the story of the man who never lied.

Long ago, in Kenya, there lived a man named Mamad. Everyone said he never told a lie. People from many villages came to see him because his words were always true.

One day, the king heard about Mamad. He was curious. “Can anyone really never lie?” thought the king. He sent his guards to bring Mamad to the palace.

When Mamad bowed before the king, the king asked, “Mamad, is it true that you have never told a lie?”
Mamad smiled and said, “Yes, it is true.”

The king tried to trick him. “Go to my queen and tell her I will join her for lunch. But we will not go hunting today,” whispered the king to his helpers.

Mamad nodded and walked to the queen. When she asked, “Will the king come for lunch?” Mamad said carefully, “Maybe he will, and maybe he will not. When I left, he had one foot in the stirrup. I do not know what happened next.”

The queen thought for a moment. She prepared lunch, but she also waited carefully.

The next day, the king came for lunch. He laughed, “Surely Mamad lied to you!”
The queen shook her head. “He only told me what he saw,” she said.

The king understood. Mamad had not lied at all. He had shown that speaking the truth, even when tricky, is very wise.
